*Intro of the interviewee*
However, not everyone might believe in makeup as a full time career and some might even shy away from the same, a large portion of our youth is inclined towards makeup as a career, perceptions towards the fashion industry have changed and people have shown significant interest in learning about the industry.
Today makeup is not just limited to looking good, instead people experiment with creating dynamic looks and exploring their inner creativity. It’s not just limited to females but men also prefer having it done on some occasions.

Highlights

Tell us something about yourself and how you came into the makeup industry, was this your first career choice? 1:20-2:40

I wouldn’t say back then when I started my career, this was the first career choice for many of us. Most parents would push children to pursue either medical or engineering, So I myself am an engineer. After being in a corporate environment for few years I realised that maybe I need to add some skills to my skill set, maybe the corporate life is not enough for me so let’s give something else a try, when all this was going in my mind I randomly got a message from an institute that they were organizing few weekend classes and I thought let’s give it a try. So I went for the demo and I developed an interest in it and here I am now.

How should one start if they want to become a makeup artist 6:01- 8:15

Like I mentioned, understand your niches, there are many institutes but I would suggest students to do their research, don’t go on the basis of advertisements because I have also been a victim to these advertisements, because what some of the institutes do is that they jot down a really good curriculum but I think the speed and grasping power of everyone is different so a beginner will take a longer time to learn as compared to someone having an experience. So start with the basics you will understand how you like this particular field as a career so youtube is also a really good platform to learn about this.

Now, talking about the pandemic and how it’s affected people’s livelihoods, what is your opinion about makeup as a profession in a pandemic? 18:30-21:25

To be very true, it was very difficult for me because in this field people have to touch the clients face, so a lot of people have been laid off and there have been various attritions, So because I didn’t have to earn my bread from this, I got some time to develop my skill set. So it has been difficult for a lot of people but at the same time it has taught a lot of things to us.

What is your opinion on people preferring to do their own makeup as compared to a professional makeup artist? 21:28-24:50

That’s true, people can do their own makeup. If I am doing my own makeup and my eyeliner is not on point, I have a number of excuses, as if it doesn’t matter, not everyone will notice me etc. So creating a base and applying over the table foundation are two different things, so when an artist is doing your makeup he knows the type of makeup that would suit you the way your eyeliner should be winged, the longevity of your makeup, what experiment will suit you and which won’t. Like even if we can fix the fuses of our home does that mean we don’t require electricians? No right? So that’s about it.

Very Important points

What skill should one possess if they want to venture in this profession 2:45-6:00

See I believe it is really important to understand what you want from this particular field, do you want to earn your bread from the same or is it a passion that you want to pursue. Any job that one takes up should be able to satisfy them internally and you should be happy in whatever it is that you’re doing, I won’t say that I am sorry for the corporate life that I was in, because it has added a lot of positive characteristics in me because now I am a good manager, even after becoming a freelancer, management is an utmost requirement, it was even paying me well and because it paid me well I had the liberty to experiment but not many of us have that liberty.

So before entering this field just understand your wants from this career. There’s this perception that anybody that falls under this spectrum of fashion industry is a beautician, but we have failed to educate people that the fashion industry has different fields like a beautician is different and a makeup artist is different and a cosmetologist is different from each other. I have seen children completing their 10th and entering and working under different senior artists and there they have started with their career line.

What are some premium institutes that one can join that are cost effective as well as provide quality knowledge? 8:17-12:10

See this cost effective terminology is a very tricky one in this field, because information is very easy to grasp in today’s time. We have Ashwin Munjal in Delhi, I think even VLCC provides a basic course, we have Lakme academy, Atul Chauhan Academy, Chandani Singh, Vidya Tikari, Jiya Sosa there are n number of people. So if you’re a beginner and you have deep pockets then investing a handsome amount is reasonable because you have a clear mind about this career. But, if you are a beginner and you’re not so sure about the industry as a full time career I would suggest you to start low.

To be honest I started my journey from an institute where I learned only the basics of makeup and I have never learned advanced makeup and then I kept up with the trend. So artistry is the key.

What income can one expect ranging from beginner to advanced level 13:18-18:25

So I have charged people 12000 rupees for a pre wedding shoot for 12 hours then there are also people who charge 5000 rupees for a bridal makeup. So understand what is your target audience and just find your niche and charge accordingly. But remember one thing, don’t go lower than a basic price. People say there are a lot of beauticians nowadays, so what? Provide quality and people will choose you over anybody else.

If you’re charging low then the number of clients you need will increase and vice versa.

When we talk about makeup artists what all different areas does it comprise of? 24:55-27:10

It’s optional if you want to learn hair styling or not but I would suggest learning it. When we provide packages we have to include hair style in it so contracts me you have to provide travelling cost and the charges to the hairdresser and it may so happen that at the end moment the hair dresser might not show up due to some or the other reason so I have been a victim to this scenario and believe me you have to save your reputation and somehow get out of that situation in such cases so, I would suggest be prepared for anything that you are offering to someone.
