*Intro of the interviewee*

A decade ago mass communication was not the most preferred field of choice by most students but now the scenario has changed immensely. Any factor related to media and journalism can come under the spectrum of Mass Communication, be it newspapers, journals, advertising films, radio, production houses, publication houses and Television.

Apart from the number of jobs, the challenge, creative satisfaction and good remuneration package, these jobs are some of the other factors for the students to move towards it.
Keeping aside news anchors, journalism has varied fields that people from different walks of life can enter into and grab on their opportunity in the same. Also understanding the industry from someone who has an experience in the same and is a facilitator in that field is what any student looks forward to, that’s why Mentor Monkey has brought to you this series “Career Unlock” where we get insights from the prevailing industry to help you get a better overview of the same.

Highlights

What is the difference between bachelors in journalism and bachelors in mass comm 2:42-10:15

Before comparing these two degrees, I would first like to point out the different bachelor’s programmes offered by the different universities that they can opt for, because when I say journalism, there’s not just one degree available in the market. There are degrees like BA in Journalism and Mass communication, Bachelors in Mass Media, Bachelors in Media Management etc. however the foundation of these courses revolve around the media industry also the course structure differs from one university to another.

However my advice to the students will be that they opt for BA in Journalism and Mass Communication as this degree has a wider scope it covers different aspects and international relation.

I would say these degrees are not just limited to a specification; rather it is a big tool and a lot of things to explore, now the scope is not just confined to mainstream media rather the avenue has grown big.

What different fields can one enter in mass comm and journalism 29:21-35:45

I believe this is the one field that is not confined to a specific role, when a student does engineering for example IT engineering or mechanical engineering or civil engineering, their scope is limited to that specific field. Now I always point out to my students, since I am a media ethics teacher, I always point out to my students that when you bring news that your editor refuses to publish, you always have an option to bring up your own channel since alternate media has given birth to so many avenues.
When students think about journalism the first thing that comes in their mind is the news anchor, but journalism is far wide scoped than news anchors, because anchor is just a face that represents the work gathered by a number of people in the background
There are upcoming fields like public relation, advertisement, people come from commerce background, engineering and get inclined towards journalism. Suppose a student from an economics background comes to enter into journalism, I always suggest that they groom themselves for business economics. Any other field for that matter, any field can be covered in journalism.

Different career options apart from core journalism 35:46-40:00
When you say core journalism, it covers hard news, politics. Now when we go to softer type it includes magazines, like you might have seen bombay times, delhi times, food and travelling has also brought an avenue to represent food and travel industry for example shows like “Zaika India ka”
Food & travel has gotten a boost in this pandemic people have started their own youtube channels.
Digital content writing is also an amazing option that students can choose if they have an interest in writing.

How important is masters degree after a bachelors in Journalism and Mass Communication (40:00-49:20)
After completing their graduation, students prefer getting work experience, now talking about masters. It is very important for students who come from different backgrounds apart from journalism since it is important to have at least one degree that represents journalism.
Second, students who prefer masters are the ones who want to choose cademics as their career for example me, I wanted to get into teaching journalism after working for a period of time, So there’s an exam known as the National Eligibility Test (NET), to get into academics, so here having a masters is compulsory.
Some students are keen on doing masters as they want to secure their future just in case they want to get into academics, so to them I suggest they opt for a 1 year diploma in their field of specialisation.

In this covid scenario or later, can one expect a remote working & freelancing opportunity 54:19-59:25

I believe even this question’s answer may vary from field to field, because as we know people are associating Journalists with front line warriors because they have been working hard in covid situation to get relevant coverage irrespective of the risk and exposure.
We have even lost many of our top journalists, to covid. So depending on your field of choice there are options for work from home, like content writing, digital marketing. Freelancing also has a lot of scope in journalism, writing & magazine journalism.

Very Important points

When should one start applying to colleges and what preparation is required 10:15-29:20

I would like to point out that there are a lot of parameters that have to be considered or that are considered by us in the panel. We try to understand the child and his or her interests whether they have that curious approach as to why things are happening.

When we talk about the bachelors course we have to keep in mind that it is a 3 years course with 6 semesters, every university has a different approach while teaching students, many focus on a particular type of journalism in their whole curriculum and many divide the course curriculum equally amongst general awareness, designing, electronic media, print journalism etc.

Preferably, we focus on print media, because the mother of any media is writing,
you go to any different field of journalism, if you lack the skill to articulate your
thoughts then you can’t survive in this industry.

Comin back to your question, I would talk specifically about Delhi University, talking about government universities, even though the infrastructure is compromised sometimes, the course structure and fees are very well thought of considering every student that wants to opt for journalism.

To point out the best college I would say Indraprastha College for women is one of the most renowned colleges of not just Delhi but across the world. Most of the best alumni of journalism are from this college. The course offered is BA (honours) Multimedia and Mass Communication since the inception of this college. To apply for this course there’s an entrance called Delhi University Entrance Test (DUET).
The eligibility criteria for this course is that you should have 97% in your 12th standard. The paper consists of general aptitude, Verbal proficiency, General awareness and Media aptitude.

What salary package can one expect once entering the journalism industry 49:22-54:16
See this is a very scattered question, what salary package can one expect, because there are 60 students in the class and every student grabs a different package, for us as teachers all the students are one and the same we want each student to excel, there is no bias. One thing that I have observed being associated with top universities & institutes, I am associated with aaj tak’s India today media institute. I always advise my students to prepare your portfolio. Whatever we do in these three years, it’s really important to document those things because companies might require an example of your work. Now coming back to the question I would say, 35,000 per month is the least salary that one can expect in this field, however it can increase based on the students performance in the interview or academics.
